Test methods for rubber products


Shore A hardness was measured according to DIN 53505

This method, invented by Albert F. Shore in the 1920s, is by far the most widely used method for measuring elastic colloids.

The surface of the detector must be flat and parallel. The test number is read after a 3-second stay. Therefore, the measurement of Shaw A is basically used in material development and release of formula raw materials. For tangible materials, this method can only be used if it has sufficient thickness and a flat surface. Shaw A is suitable for hardness measurements from 10 to 90. Hardness above 90 must be measured by Shaw D method. It is not suitable for hardness measurement of elastic colloid.


Hardness testing instrument


- Hardness testing equipment must meet the following requirements, must be marked with Shore A or Shore D hardness tester, also marked with the manufacturer's identification and production number.

- The scale partition value must have hardness units and the scale spacing must be ≥1mm.

- The shape and size of the extruder and the surface of the bracket must conform to Figure 1.

- The elastic value of the tester is calculated by applying forces to the extruded body, which are generated by the weight.

The theoretical values of elasticity are listed in Table 1, and 5mN is selected.

- Shaw A and Shaw D hardness testers allow tolerances of ±1. Instruments for internal use should be constantly monitored by the user. When used to detect binding data (e.g. acceptance tests, etc.), the tester must be tested annually by an official testing authority in accordance with DIN51220.

The measurement of body


Shape


The diameter of the test area must be ≥35mm, and it must be smooth and flat. The surface of the measuring body must be coated with talcum powder when testing Shore A hardness. The thickness of the measured body must be ≥6mm


Measurement of hardness


Hardness is one of the important parameters in rubber technology. Freudenberg Process Seals, Germany, defines the standard hardness of all elastomer materials (e.g. 70EPDM 291). There are many different standard methods of measuring hardness. But always to measure how deep a fixed detector can squeeze into the colloid with a given force.
